All early years provisions need to have plans in place for the unforeseen incidents, accidents and emergencies that do occasionally occur. It’s vital that staff and managers know what to do in such circumstances, so that the danger of panic or the emergency being made worse is minimised. All plans should be drawn up with staff involvement, and should be communicated to staff on induction, during regular training, and at meetings and briefings.
The topic on Contingency Planning within Croner-i Early Years Management Toolkit for dot2dot explains exactly how to plan for unexpected events and it has now been reviewed and updated. There are new sections on the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, Major Incidents, Winter Emergencies and Power Cuts, and Heatwave Emergencies.
